Dear (upcoming) canoeist,
For 40 years I have been canoeing and kayaking across different waters in Europe, occasionally flat and sometimes white water.
Why this guide about Sweden you will wunder ....
On of the wishes of many people is a journey through the wilderness of Sweden.
Sweden is a canoeing country and is ideal for trips from half a day upp to 3 weeks.
From North to South canoeing possibilities are nearly endless!
However, the country is quite sparsely populated , so there is also less infrastructure and more nature.
Often shops, banks, etc are not nearby, so you need to plan a number of things.
If you are well prepared you will most likely have an unforgettable experience
Welcome to Sweden!
2. General information about Sweden.
- to travel by car or motorcyclee https:www://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/countr y/sweden.html
-the best time to go
Mid of June to late September
Sweden has for the most part a boreal climate, with summers about similar to the other european countries, but it can also be cool in the night and in the morning, so adept your clothes and a sleeping bag on it.
The Swedish Crown, Summer 2017, new coins and paper money have been printed, so if you have any
Currency at home, check this website for validity:
papers and documents
-If taveling in Sweden, you will need a valid passport or ID card.
- An insurance card or document from your health insurance.
-A travel insurance, which also covers canoeing.
-If you travel by car or motor, the green card is no longer mandatory,
Please provide proof that you are the rightful owner / user.
International Damage Form and Insurance.
Dogs and cats need a passport and valid vaccination papers; (rabies)
From January 1, 2012, the entry requirements for Sweden have changed
the blood test and the long waiting time after the rabies
vaccination are over. Also the requirements for deworming are changed.
3 Canoeing in the wildernes is exciting!
"The silence is so intense that you can hear the blood in your ears, on the mirror-shining, clear water of one of the many lakes that you paddle during your journey.
In the evenings sitting in front of your campfire, thinking about the beaver who swam before you and hit his tail hard on the water to make sure he watched you, the soft sound of water wich drips from your paddle .... "
After a few days, you will get into the rhythm of nature and this will give you rest in your adventure.
The canoe is a great way of transporting you to places that are otherwise unreachable.
Of course there are also days to work hard, against the wind and through the waves, or a land transport, pushing the canoe and your backpack on your back.
All this together makes a canoe trip in Sweden a wonderful adventure!
4. Where can I paddle
The area where we are located is called Tiomila Skogen
(10 miles forest) and is located in
Dalarna, one of Sweden's most beautiful provinces.
At the heart of this area lies our canoe school and rental, in the village Tyngsjö, with 38 inhabitants a pearl in the wilderness.
The area consists of rocky forest hills up to 700 meters high and countless lakes, streams, and rivers, the one more beautiful than the other ......
We have a number of tours on our website, but prefer prepairing the trip together in consultation with our guests.
Depending on the water level, we offer river tours, lake tours and combinations of both.
To minimize the pressure on the area we work with up to 8 people in a group.
Larger groups are welcome to visit Arvika canoe center or Bengtfors canoe center.
With our method we can guarantee loneliness and silence, because we don't want the area being overrun by people. like unfortunately many other canoeing areas in Europe.
5. Do I need a canoeing experience?
If you go for a first time canoeing in Sweden it is advisable to try to paddle in your own country first.
there are surely rentalls in your area.
Or better, please contact a canoeing association, these often organize open days so that
You can try different boat models, and get good instruction at the same time.
Another good option is to contact an open canoe school like Herbie Bird Canoe school
You will then get specialists in open canoe sports like Rick Kramer, and Arij van der Kooij. Their passion for canoeing is visible when you see them in the canoe.
Nowadays, they also provide a course to prepare for a (longer) canoe trip
6. Do's and don, t's
Canoeing in the wild is a chalenge but relatively safe as long as you comply with a number of rules. swimming art is a must for safe paddling.
- Always wear a life jacket .
-paddle not allone if possible.
-Let the home front know where you are.
-Traverse a big lake as little as possible, keep as much as possible the high shore. (where the wind comes from)
- take protective clothing against rain, cold, mosquitoes and / or midges
never drink water from a lake or river (cook 10 minutes or filter)
- beware of boiling water!
- sharp tools like knives, axes and saws cause accidents every year, be careful! It takes relatively long for the
rescue services to arrive.
never make a campfire with stone rings made out of stones that you take directly out of the water;
they can explode!
- Always leave the water at thunderstorms! Hiding on dry land is always safer
-When wind or storm it may be safer to schedule a 'resting day'.
-See Swedish ''allemansrecht'' in preparation for your trip.
- Be safe and leave no trace!
Sweden is the only country in the world where this universal law applies.
Typically, this is a right that is not described in a lawbook, but what is valid
nevertheless. In other words, violation of the law is indeed punishable!
8. Canoe rental companies; what to watch out for.
Canoe rental companies can be found throughout Sweden. First of all, determine where you want to paddle,
after that you can find a canoe rental nearby.
In any case, to be sure of a serious rental company always pay attention to the logo of the covenant
of rental companies.
Unfortunately, this logo does not give you any assurance that the staff on site are also knowledgeable, it says something about the fact that the material that is renting is approved by the Maritime Administration,
If you want to be sure that the staff is also knowledgeable,
check if they are affiliated with the EPP, or European paddle pass The logo looks like this:
9. Preparation for the trip
The holiday is already starting while planning at home!
If you have chosen an area where you want to go, try to get an overview map
from the area where the trip will take place. The outfitter often has them on the website or can mail them when you registrar.
Detailed maps can be bought locally at the outfitter or ordered from the local bookstore
Our maps are listed in the links below.
If you are a ''map lover'' you can buy the Swedish 'green map' at your local bookstore or at the internet https://www.kartbutiken.se/636-appelbo-terrangkartan
These 2 cards cover a big part of our tours.
Contact a reental and / or canoeing school of your choice.
Explain what kind of trip you want to padle (often in English)
Look for what material the rental has,
Often, outfitters are talking that their canoes can load 400 kg ..... or they rent out 100 liters barrels,
they are clumsy, awkward and always unnecessarily heavy.
Often a choice of outfitters who unfortunately do not or hardly paddle themselves.
Assume that every paddler does not carry more than a 65 liter backpack and the foodthat you need There are also paddles, life jackets, sponges, latrineshovel, and possibly
You will be grateful at each transfer, as every extra kilo in the canoe feels like 5 extra kilos during land transport.
Assume that if you rent a kayak, the amount of luggage you carry is still limited.
Everything must be transported in small packages, otherwise it will not fit in luggage spaces.
Carefully assemble a first aid kit with o.a patches, dressings, disinfectants, painkillers and something against mosquito bites.
If you take any medicine, take at least a little more than the dose you use during the treatment.
Anti mosquito net of choice,
A nice way to prepare for the canoeing is to watch the different instructional videos on you tube.
Watching Paul and Becky Mason are "good examples when it comes to open canoeing Link
Have you really become curious? We offer a morning training course before departure where you learn some basic techniques that make your vacation a lot more fun ....
10. Packing list
What do you take with you for a trip?
Partly this is obviously personal, but this guide will make it a little easier.
-backpack 60/80 Liter (Children can wear about 1/5 of their body weight, take that into account!)
-1 tent: max 3500 g
- sleeping matress
- sleeping bags
-burner and faucet incl. pot or pan
-1 bottle of fire liquid f or gas bottle, mug, plate cutlery incl pocket knife-toiletarticles + towel, first aid kit bottle water-Miscellaneous (headlights, wash detergent for clothes, long, short pants double set of underwear, hat ,sweaters, rainwear, hiking shoes, water shoes, fishing gear (information on-site for a fishing license) - We can also rent a complete camping gear: tent, mats, burner pans, cutlery, plates, mugs, waterproof bags. -Food, Calculate on the number of days plus 1, in case of emergency. About nutrition we can write books, but the golden rule is dried (moisture is weight), nutritious, flavorful, vitamins. A nice link is the HikingAdvisor food section with a lot of tips to good light weight food.
More and more supermarkets sell ready-to-eat meals and drops of water water can be taken from the lakes and cooked or filtered suitable for consumption.
Waterproof bags are often for rent at the outfitter, but a PE bag or double garbage bag does it too (fits easily in your backpack) -axes, saws, and other wood cutting tools are actually an unnecessary luxury in our area. Nothing is easier and safer than collecting wood on the forestfloor for your campfire. Shredding and sawing dead and living trees is strictly forbidden, as well as breaking down branches and unbarking trees, so why would you drag the extra weight? Instead, you can take fire starters if you are not a branded fire maker.
11. Doing a course?
After all the preparation, extra curious about the different oaddle technics? order a course!
